The work of local photographer Jon Klein is a celebration of the beauty of the Mendocino Coast. His favorite subjects to photograph are wild birds and animals, misty forest scenes, powerful ocean waves, and dramatic coastal views. This piece is a 12x18 inch metal print taken one summer afternoon while he vacationed on Salt Spring Island, B.C. Hearing birds chirping excitedly up in some trees, I walked over and saw the owl calmly perched on a branch while surrounded by angry songbird. Two robins kept flying down and hitting it on the head and on its back, sometimes knocking out feathers. The owl flew to several different trees and after a few hours the other birds gave up and left. It was taking a short nap when I took this photo. Later I saw it fly to the ground, catch a big garden snake, and carry it into the tree to eat.
